Liturgical Ministries
“In every celebration of the Eucharist, there should be a sufficient number of ministries of Holy Communion so that it may be distributed in a reverent and orderly manner. Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord.
(1) When the size of the congregation or the incapacity of the bishop, priests, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by the other bishops, priests, or deacons. If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, “the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose. In case of necessity, the priest may also depute suitable faithful for this single occasion (GIRM 162).” (USCCB- United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).
Liturgical Ministries Mission Statement: We assist with particular services to facilitate our Catholic worship.
• Eucharist Ministers: Those who assist the priest in distributing Holy Communion. At the conclusion of Mass we help clean the sacred vessels that were used during the Mass. In addition to assisting at Mass, we deliver Holy Communion to those who are unable to make it to Mass due to illness, being home bound, etc. We also conduct Communion Services when the priest is not available to celebrate Mass.
• Lectors: Those who proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture and share God’s Word with the congregation, with the exception of the Gospel. We also announce the intentions for the Intercessory of Prayer and, recite the Psalm between readings.
• In order to be trained and commissioned as a Eucharistic Minister or Lector, one must have received Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
